Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)
What to Expect with Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)
Our work together starts with getting to know you - your hopes, your long-term goals, and what you’d like support with. From there, we’ll explore whether Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an appropriate and supportive path for you.
KAP is not recommended for individuals currently taking benzodiazepines or for those with a history of mania, dissociation, or certain personality disorders. For many people taking SSRIs or SNRIs, however, ketamine can be a therapeutic option worth considering. Together, we will discuss your specific situation in a thorough and collaborative way.
Why Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?
The intention of KAP is to help reduce, or in some cases significantly alleviate, symptoms associated with depression and other mental health challenges. One unique aspect of ketamine is that it typically does not require tapering off your existing prescription medications. This means you can continue your current therapeutic and medication support while engaging in KAP.
A Safe and Thoughtful Prescription Process
I follow a careful and ethical mediation protocol that honors the seriousness of psychotropic treatment. If KAP appears to be a good fit, I will provide a referral to one of our trusted psychiatric nurse practitioners or psychiatrists. You’ll meet with the prescriber for a consultation, and if you both determine that ketamine is appropriate, you may be prescribed ketamine in the form of an oral lozenge.
You’ll then pick up your medication directly from a pharmacy. This entire process is safe, legal, and designed to support your well-being.
Structure of Ketamine-Assisted Sessions
Ketamine-Assisted Therapy is typically offered as a series of 6–8 sessions, each lasting approximately 2.5 hours. We will determine the exact number of sessions together based on your needs, intentions, and therapeutic goals.
Before beginning the series, most clients engage in 3–6 preparation sessions to build trust, clarity, and psychological readiness. After each medicine session, we will meet for integration—the process of making meaning from your experience and weaving insights into daily life.
Ceremony, Ritual, and Co-Creation
For some individuals, creating a ceremonial or psychospiritual container enhances the therapeutic experience. If this aligns with your values, we can thoughtfully design medicine space that reflects that intention. If not, the sessions can remain grounded, clinical, and attuned in whatever approach feels right for you. Our work is always a collaboration as we shape the process together.
